Job Description:

Position Overview

The Field Service Technician is responsible for troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing asphalt equipment in a safe and efficient manner. This position is also responsible for needed inspections on a variety of equipment.  

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Service and repair all assigned vehicles, equipment, and associated items without assistance and without delaying production activities.
  • Accurately follow the company’s preventative maintenance program and service schedule.
  • Inspect vehicles and equipment for proper operation and condition.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical and operational problems.
  • Work effectively on gasoline and/or diesel engines, and all mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and/or electronic systems.
  • Manage pre-trip and post-trip Inspection Reports to identify, track, and complete necessary repair and maintenance.
  • Train truck drivers and operators on how to correctly inspect and maintain their assigned vehicles and monitor maintenance activities.
  • Accurately document all service and repair work. Maintain complete repair and service reports.
  • Other duties as assigned per supervisor.
  • Regular and predictable attendance at assigned times is required.

Education/Experience

  • Minimum high school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
  • Certificate or degree in heavy equipment maintenance and repair required; or equivalent experience in lieu of degree. 
  • Experience diagnosing and repairing equipment, including excavators, dozers, cranes, forklifts, heavy-duty trucks, and other heavy construction equipment.
  • Three-plus years of related experience are required.
  • Valid Commercial  Driver’s License (CDL), class A with Air Brakes endorsement required.
  • Must be able to supply own tools.

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to read, write, and accurately perform basic mathematical functions, including adding, subtracting, multiplication and division.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Must possess knowledge of Company policies and procedures, including safety.
  • Must consistently produce an efficient, accurate work product.
  • Must be able to work effectively under time and scheduling deadlines.

Work Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years in age or older. 
  • Must have a current and valid driver’s license.
  • Must pass post-offer employment drug testing, medical exams, and physical agilities testing.
  • Must be willing to travel and work independently to various job sites. Some overnight stays will be necessary.
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers and/or supervisors with other duties as required.
  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when necessary.
  • Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA.

  • Must perform mechanical operations while lying or reclining in awkward positions for extended periods.

  • Must withstand continuous exposures to wind, dust, fumes, and noxious odors.

  • Must possess the strength, mobility, agility and balance to ascend access ladders and steps, and to maneuver on equipment and vehicles without assistance.
  • Must repetitively lift up to 100 pounds, 10 times a day.
  • Required upper body strength to perform repetitive bending at the waist.
  • Must repetitively climb and dismount from a high vehicle cab 50-times a day.
  • Must repetitively lift up to 60 pounds, 50 times a day.
  • Must possess      sufficient strength to continuously operate equipment controls and tools      weighing up to 20-pounds for uninterrupted periods of up to 4-hours.
  • Skeletal, joint and muscle system must withstand continuous impact from driving activities.

Work Environment

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, outside weather conditions, and extreme cold and/or heat. 
  • The employee may be occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • The employee may be exposed to the risk of electrical shock or burn.  
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
  • Work schedule is Monday through Friday with weekend and some holiday and evening work required. Generally, 50+ hours per week. Day Shift 7:00 am to 4:30 pm.
