Position Overview

We are seeking a versatile and experienced Low Boy Driver with mechanic experience to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a valid commercial driver's license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements for low boy trailer operation, along with mechanical skills to perform basic maintenance and repairs on heavy equipment and trucks as needed.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Operate a low boy trailer to transport oversized loads and heavy equipment, such as bulldozers, excavators, and other construction machinery, to and from job sites, construction sites, quarries or client locations.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post trip inspections of the low boy trailer and its equipment to ensure safety and roadworthiness.
  • Secure heavy equipment properly on the trailer using chains, straps, and other securing devices according to DOT regulations.
  • Drive defensively and adhere to all traffic laws, regulations, and company policies while transporting equipment.
  • Communicate effectively with Ideal RM team to coordinate pickups, deliveries, and routes.
  • Perform basic maintenance and repairs on heavy equipment and troubleshooting minor issues.
  • Assist with loading and unloading heavy equipment, ensuring safe handling and proper placement on the trailer.
  • Complete all required paperwork, including trip logs, delivery receipts, and inspection reports accurately and on time.
  • Follow safety protocols for working around heavy equipment, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and following lockout/tagout procedures.

Education/Experience

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred, or demonstrable equivalent.
  • Must possess a Class A CDL with airbrakes and have the ability to obtain other endorsement.
  • Previous experience driving over the road with flat bed/open bed preferred.

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to read, write, and accurately perform basic mathematical functions including adding, subtracting, multiplication and division.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Must possess knowledge of Company policies and procedures, including safety.
  • Must consistently produce and efficient, accurate work product.

Work Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years in age or older. 
  • Must pass post-offer employment drug testing, medical exams, and physical agilities testing.
  • Must pass D.O.T. required physical.
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers and/or supervisors with other duties as required.
  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
  • Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA.

  • Must be capable of driving vehicles in off-road conditions for extended periods.

  • Must withstand continuous exposures to wind, dust, fumes, and noxious odors.

  • Must possess the strength, mobility, agility, and balance to ascend access ladders and steps, and to maneuver on equipment and vehicles without assistance.
  • Must repetitively climb and dismount from a high vehicle cab 50-times a day.
  • Must be able to lift up to 100 lbs and carry 50 lbs multiple times per day.
  • Must enter and exit trucks multiple times throughout the day in a safe manner.
  • Skeletal, joint and muscle system must withstand continuous impact from driving activities.
